About MilkyWay@home
Milkyway@home is a research project that uses Internet-connected computers to do research in modeling and determining the evolution of the Milkyway galaxy. You can participate by downloading the BOINC software and attaching your computer to the project.
Milkyway@home is based at the Rensselaer Computer Science Department in New York. This particular project is being developed to better understand the power of volunteer computing resources.

The astronomy application attempts to discover various structures existing in the Milky Way galaxy and their spatial distribution. This requires a probabilistic algorithm for locating geometric objects in spatial databases. The data being analyzed is from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which has recently released 10 terabytes of images and spectra in online catalogs.

Team totals when starting - 26th May 2008;

Probably best to keep a close eye on this project Rambo!. Its a new project and although i have personally had no trouble from it, just keep an eye on it anyway!

Watch things like the server status page to see how much work is avalable; http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/server_status.php . They currently seem to be out of work but that could change in a few hours or in the next day or two. If they do have work avalable, i think there is a daily limit of about 20 work units per machine (I am not sure about this).

Read the messages in the MilkyWay message boards. They are usually a good way of finding whats happening at the moment.

Ahhhh.... The website is back up anyway. But some of the server functions are offline and no new work; http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/server_status.php. I'm sure they will be back with new work soon!

Hay!!..... I just love that new BOINC avatar you have :ABSUN:

Did you make that yourself Rambo?. Its very cool, would you like to make a few more if you have time and post the images here on the forum! Very cool!

yes I made up the avatar myself they take a while to make up.

I was thinking it would be great if you could also have the Project of month Server status page
with the rest project links.

Another update on the database -- we've emailed labstaff so hopefully they'll have some answers for us tomorrow (because everything we're trying to do now is either timing out or seg faulting). Hopefully we'll have the mess fixed up soon, and new searches up and running right after that

looks like they need help with the servers.

What do you mean Rambo?
1. Do you use the 5 buttons in the milkyway article on the front page?

2. Are you suggesting that more buttons for other important project pages would be good?

3. I could have a short article on the front page with a "read More...." link that takes you to the full milkyway page here on this website. Would that be what you are suggesting?

4. Or are you suggesting that i add one of these things; http://www.esea.dk/esea/boincschedulers.php , they tell you very little and its very general. But i'm open minded.

5. I am considering doing a full page on the website for every project. This page would have about 10 or 15 or 20 buttons to take you to important stuff on the project, a bit like the current 5 buttons in the milkyway article. It will take time to make these pages. It might be a month or two. All ideas welcome, or you could suggest stuff or get material for the pages if you like.

1. Do you use the 5 buttons in the milkyway article on the front page? yes

And add a button for the Server Status page so six buttons in total
example for Milkyway
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/server_status.php

because these projects or not allways on line and would be great to a quick link
to server status for that project.

Done!!!

I added a button called "Server Status" and it opens the server status page. I must admit, this new button is good. And to be very honest, i am also using all the buttons. Maybe not all at the same time, but depending on what i am looking for each time i visit this website, i click different buttons in that milkyway article. :ABCHAP:

Hi Guys,

Long time no visit.

Glad to see the team is doing well in the Milky Way Project. Wish i could help but the project is a bit risky for my production machines.

What else has been happening. What is everyone up to.

You were on the missing list for a while Shane.....Good to break from this from time to time.

We are doing OK on MilkyWay@home, 10 members signed up and 8 have credit. Climbing fast, its a good project.

Its funny Shane, but actually picking a PotM was tricky, its very hard to get a project that fills the criteria properly;
Criteria;
1. Project where team Ireland has small credit

2. Project is safe enough to send relatively inexperienced users to with out fear of problem work units.

3. Has a constant supply of work for the coming month

4. Is exciting science and important science

That's why i didn't stick to the list we made out for "Target Projects 2008". When you check these projects, they might be OK in January but a few months later, they don't meet the criteria for one reason or another.

Shane your doing pretty good your self on SETI, you have 11K RAC......That not too bad!! :ABCFARM:

You seem to have part of the Intel factory connected to your account!! :ABTUMUP: Good times!! ....Have you got connections in that Intel plant in Leixlip that we don't know about?

Your No.2 on that team, did you see "Rory" in No.1 spot, he has 24K RAC. That the largest BOINCer in Ireland by a long shot!!......Ever!! (Excluding our invited American friends who joined for the Gauntlet)

Hi guys,

My first post :) Just thought I would say that they seem to be sending more work from the Milkyway project but only a few hours worth a day. I have it running with Rosetta on my machine.

I only started using boinc to check if my overclock (quad core 2.4@3.3) was stable but as its been running weeks non stop now figured I might as well let it keep running as it doesnt seem to affect anything im doing.

Hi Liam,
Good to have you with us!

Bi god Liam, your our top man on both Rosetta and Milkyway :ABSUN: , so your doing OK for someone who was just using BOINC as a kinda benchmarking tool for your overclock!

Mind you, using BOINC projects like Rosetta, SETI@home and others is a very good method of testing your PC in a scientific manner. Lots of guys that have installed mods to their PC use video games to see what effect there mods have made to PC performance. But BOINC projects are also an excellent method as you can set exactly how much CPU power BOINC is allowed to use and let it run for long periods of time. And there is really good science being done in many interesting fields.

The work from the Milkyway project is kinda sporadic at the best of times :AB(: . Its a new project and the admins are just getting familiar with running the project and porting the apps.

Good to have you on board Liam,

John. :ABCCOF:

Cheers for the welcome John :)

I have the cores at 3.25. Even at this speed the cores dont go above 50 degrees after running for a week 24/7. I am using a cheap arctic cooling freezer pro heatsink on it (its huge). Can play games at highest settings no problem and boinc still runs happily in the background which is nice.
